Luminescent Bergamot Feeds Our Desire for Sunshine
Bergamot’s quality as a ‘phototoxin’ can actually be put to good use in Winter. On a subtle level, the essential oil makes us more sensitive to light. I don’t recommend having a massage with Bergamot oil and then sunbathing or using a sunbed. You might get seriously sunburnt! But in Winter, when sunlight on our body is rare, Bergamot can open us to receiving all kinds of light—sunlight, spiritual light, inner radiance, joy, luminescence, and maybe even laughter. Bergamot can lighten depression, our dark feelings, and “the blues”. It can feed our cells with light and balance our appetite. It nourishes our nervous system, which feeds on light, and enlightens our 3rd eye and pineal gland for greater intuition. Bergamot feeds our desire for warmth and sunshine.
Most people love the scent of Bergamot. The child of lemon and bitter orange parents, Bergamot is green, ‘not-quite ripe’ fruity and fresh smelling with an unfamiliar air unless you drink Earl Grey tea. (It is not the same Bergamot that people grow in their gardens.) I use it to lighten up and release pent-up emotions especially if I am feeling the need to “control” them. Just smelling Bergamot feels like I am taking a bath of light. It is deeply calming and refreshing at the same time. Bergamot helps those with SAD, addictions (including food), nervous indigestion, mood swings, anxiety, and depression. It is also a key oil for unexpressed anger and other emotions. It feels appropriate for those with communication hindrances (throat chakra issues) that affect their ability to shine their heart’s light in the World.
Dr Bruce Berkowsky, developer of Spiritual PhytoEssencing, sees the Bergamot personality type as someone who “oscillates between ascent and descent” (darkness and light). In a success state the person is impassioned, fruitful, committed, and illuminated in soul. In a failed state, darkness, impurity, and estrangement pose a threat. Their challenge is to get off the seesaw and meld opposites. Instead of repressing the dark, the darkness needs to be “metamorphosed into light-seeking forces.”
Another aromatherapist uses Bergamot to communicate with angelic beings of light and see the “unseen.” Deborah Eidson in her book Vibrational Healing writes, Bergamot “helps the personality surrender it’s need to be in control and allows the forces of grace, wisdom, compassion, trust, and acceptance to direct life instead of fear.”
On a global level, I believe Bergamot can help us remain more emotionally constant and committed to humanity and our Earth as we experience deep swings of the darkness and the light. We can illuminate ourselves and others by accepting, integrating and then metamorphizing darkness into light. We can be Luminescent too! I like to use Bergamot essential oil in several ways: by smelling it directly from the bottle, adding about 5 drops to my bath, using a spray mister around my head (with Ylang Ylang, Cinnamon called “Fairy Wings”), or placing a drop on my palms, rubbing them together, and then smelling the oil deeply. Careful with sunlight if you use any on your skin.
